Format a Word document in APA

Formatting a Word document in APA can be tricky. Follow along with our YouTube video or take a look at our sample paper to set yours up.

In-text citations in APA

You need to create an in-text citation every time you directly or indirectly quote from a source. The in-text citation helps your reader find the complete citation on the References list at the end of your paper.

APA in-text citations include the source author, year of publication, and page number in the in-text citation:

"This is a direct quote in your paper" (Author, Year, p. ##).

You can also use a signal phrase. In that case, write the author and year in the body of the sentence, and save the page numbers for the end of the quote:

According to Author (Year), "this is another way to format in-text citations" (p. ##).

There are variations on this format if your source doesn't have an author, a date, or page numbers. Use the video or check out the help links below the video for more information.
